Ghana’s Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, inaugurated the Built Environment National Conference on Housing and Hydrology (BENCHH) 2024 at the Labadi Beach Hotel, marking a pivotal moment in addressing the country’s urgent and critical challenges with flooding and housing deficits.

During his opening address, Minister Oppong Nkrumah unveiled the Ghana Hydrological Fund, a vital initiative to mitigate flood risks and enhance water management nationwide. The fund, bolstered by the government’s initial seed funding of GHS 1.5 million, seeks to mobilize additional support from development partners and stakeholders.

Highlighting the issue’s urgency, the Minister underscored Ghana’s vulnerability to flooding, exacerbated by inadequate drainage infrastructure and the impacts of climate change. He emphasized that only a fraction of drainage channels in the Greater Accra Region have been adequately addressed, demanding swift and comprehensive action.

In addition to flood mitigation efforts, Minister Oppong Nkrumah addressed Ghana’s substantial housing deficit, which currently stands at 1.8 million units. Acknowledging funding constraints and project delays in affordable housing initiatives, he advocated for robust public-private partnerships and incentivized private sector involvement to expedite large-scale housing projects.

Throughout the three-day conference, discussions will focus on regulatory reforms, establishing a Works Inspectorate Unit, and strategies to enhance adherence to building and safety standards. The Ministry aims to solicit stakeholder feedback to refine policies and foster innovative approaches in the built environment sector.

Minister Oppong Nkrumah expressed his unwavering optimism about the outcomes of BENCHH 2024, calling for collaborative efforts to drive tangible progress in Ghana’s infrastructure development. He urged participants to actively engage in deliberations and contribute to comprehensively shaping solutions that address the nation’s pressing housing and hydrology challenges.
