Mudslides and flooding killed more than 200 in the central province of Punjab and parts of disputed Kashmir region, the National Disaster Management Authority said.

“More than 200,000 at risk of inundation in Sindh are being moved to safer places,” Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said.

Hundreds of troops, helicopters from army aviation and rescue boats were taking part in the evacuation operation, a military spokesman said Tuesday.

“It is a race against time,” Asif said. “We expect nearly a million cusec feet water would enter Sindh province in a couple of days.”

Television footage show people on rooftops and in trees waiting for help in flooded villages.

At least two eastern rivers were still in high flood, disaster agency spokesman Ahmed Kamal said.

The Chenab and Jhelum rivers have breached and inundated more than 28,000 acres of cropland in Punjab, he said.
