In a statement, the facilitator urged the entire Congolese political class to give a chance to the new push to search for a consensual solution to the prevailing situation in DR Congo.
The announcement was however not well received by the opposition led by Etienne Tshisekedi.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Rally for Political and Social Forces for Change, a grouping led by Tshisekedi, declared that Tuesday was a day for “ghost town” protest in DR Congo’s 26 provinces.
The group noted that none of the preconditions raised by the opposition before the start of dialogue had been satisfactorily addressed.
“The Rally considers the move by Kodjo as a provocation. Despite his rejection for the role of facilitator, he has decided to stubbornly go ahead with his preparatory committee meeting on Aug. 23, 2016,” the statement said.
The Congo Liberation Movement (MLC), the party of ex-vice president Jean-Pierre Bemba, said “it was not bothered by the issue of dialogue.”
“I am not changing my mind. We have said it several times. Those who wish to go for the dialogue, we wish them well. Go there but grant us only one thing; respect for the Constitution,” said Eve Bazaiba, MLC secretary general.
DR Congo President Joseph Kabila has urged his political opponents to take part in the dialogue to resolve electoral disputes before the organization of presidential elections. Enditem
