Hundreds of youths on Monday held protests along Cotonou-Lome road, to oppose attempts to arrest Candide Azannai, an opposition parliamentarian on the ticket of National Unity party, an opposition alliance.
BeninBesides the rioting youths, several opposition political personalities including outgoing Parliament Speaker Mathurin Nago and Cotonou deputy mayor Leahady Soglo equally condemned the attempted arrest.
Ferdinand Amoussou, a retired army general, said attempts to arrest Azannai “could plunge the country in a crisis with unforeseeable consequences.”
“I urge the president to take immediate necessary measures to restore calm and save our country from sliding into violence,” he said, while also urging security forces to demonstrate professionalism and political neutrality as they accomplish their duties.
Benin’s public prosecutor Mordechee Kilanyossi said on Monday he had summoned Azannai for questioning following a complaint by Benin’s President Boni Yayi that Azannai had “insulted’ him during last month’s legislative elections. Enditem
