The Polish Foreign Ministry has summoned the Russian ambassador to protest remarks by a nationalist Russian politician that Poland and the Baltics will be “wiped out” should a war break out between Russia and the West.
Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski told the Polsat broadcaster on Tuesday that the remarks by nationalist Russian parliamentarian Vladimir Zhirinovsky were “scandalous.”
“Zhirinovsky represents the opposition, but he is neither a backbencher nor a private person,” Sikorski said of the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party.
Russia’s annexation of Crimea in March and its backing of separatist rebels in the east of Ukraine have strained ties with the West and Eastern European states.
