Rwandan youth urged to emulate freedom fighters


The National Youth Council in partnership with Youth associations, cooperatives, and nonprofit youth groups from Kigali City have met in the community work normally known as umuganda to support former freedom fighters in Kicukiro district.

The event took place on Saturday 22nd June 2019 in Mubano Village, Rusheshe Cell in Masaka sector of Kicukiro district in Kigali City where young people have cleaned the residence of more than 80 families of ex-combatants who fought to stop the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in which more than a million people lost their lives.

This activity of special community service was also conducted by Youth in all districts to mark the preparations of the 25th anniversary of the liberation of the Country commonly celebrated on 4th July each year in Rwanda.

Over 150 youth leaders of cooperatives and business companies have participated in the community service with financial contribution worth over two million Rwandan Francs to buy basic needs like mattresses; dishes, and other home materials for ex-combatants who participated in the liberation struggle.

Speaking to the youth, the Executive Secretary of the National Youth Council MWESIGWA Robert said Rwanda has peace, and the youth have been offered all it takes to develop the Country.

“The youth need to learn from the values of those who liberated the Country in 25 years ago, all we have to fight is now the poverty.”

Speaking on behalf of Youth cooperatives, Mr. SIBOMANA Joseph they raised 2,2 Million Rwandan Francs to buy different materials for the families of ex-combatants who fought for the peace that Rwanda is enjoying today.

He thanks the courage of those families and ensures them that this activitiy will be conducted each year to support them.

On 28th June, the Rwandan youth will also attend the conversation on their role to contribute in the development of their Country as well as to learn from the values of Rwanda’s freedom fighters.

Honourable Imaniriho Clarisse, youth representative in Rwanda’s parliament, encourages peers to be at the forefront of socio-economic transformation the Country is heading to.

Such community services are organized across the Country by the National Youth Council under the Rwanda’s ministry of Youth with partners.
