Samsung has announced its latest gaming laptop for enthusiasts called the Series 7 Gamer . This is a big and full-featured gaming notebook with a 400-nit 17.3-inch, 1080p display, Dolby Home Theater surround sound, and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675M graphics card. The Series 7 Gamers makes use of Intel Core i7 “Ivy Bridge” processors, features 16GB of RAM and 8GB of flash memory on the motherboard for use as an ExpressCache.
The different modes include a Gaming mode that turns on up red backlight on the keyboard which like the SAMSUNG N148 Keyboard and around speakers that pulses to match game sounds. When in Gaming mode, the Windows key and touchpad are disabled. The General mode operation optimizes the keyboard which like the SAMSUNG N148 Keyboard for generic computing tasks and work processing and others.
“The Series 7 Gamer offers all the elements of a high-powered gaming machine with the convenience of the mode-changing dial, which enables you to switch off components in order to save power and have a quieter experience when you’re using it as a more traditional laptop,” said Todd Bouman, vice president of marketing at Samsung Enterprise Business Division.
“When the product is in gaming mode, it takes the experience to the next level by optimizing the graphics and sound, turning on a pulsating light in the speakers and highlighting the gaming keys in red, which truly allows users to immerse themselves in a game.”
The machine also has a Quiet mode the disables sounds and turns the fan off.
Power saver mode optimizes laptop battery life by turning off all non-critical components.
Back at CES 2012, we got our first glimpse of Samsung’s new gaming laptop, the Series 7 Gamer, tucked away at Samsung’s booth with little fanfare. That laptop is finally available for purchase, and it features Intel’s new Ivy Bridge processors and the latest Nvidia graphics in a package that’s competitive with what other gaming PC makers are offering.
The $1,899 fixed-configuration version of the Series 7 Gamer (NP700G7C-S01US) announced by Samsung isn’t a tiny machine — this 17.3-inch laptop weighs 13.34 pounds — but it’s packed with specs. A 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7-3610QM CPU (slightly slower than the Asus N56V we tested at CNET), Nvidia GeForce GTX 675M graphics with 2GB of DDR5 video memory, 16GB of DDR3 RAM, a 1.5 TB hard drive with 8GB of ExpressCache memory, a Blu-ray drive, and a 1,920×1,080-pixel display are included, which pretty much covers the bases for what you’d expect in a large-scale gaming laptop. By coming in less than $2,000, it remains a more realistic gaming laptop purchase than many through-the-roof alternatives.
The Series 7 Gamer also comes with design tweaks that match the Alienware/Origin set: keyboard backlighting with specific red lights around the W, A, S and D keys, high-end speakers and a built-in subwoofer, and a mode-adjusting dial that’s reminiscent of the HP Envy’s love of control wheel.
The machine carries an MSRP of $1899.99 and is available now.
