Pro-Palestinian hackers targeted dozens of Israeli websites on Tuesday, in what has become an annual cyber attack against Israel.
Main government websites were bombarded with access requests, causing them to slow down seriously, but not to crash.
Many private sites were also targeted, including that of Israeli singer-songwriter Ivri Lider.
The symbol of hackers called Anonymous and AnonGhost appeared on the private sites, with a line in Arabic followed by a message in English:
“Greetings world we are AnonGhost
“We are always here to punish you! Because we are the voice of Palestine and we will not remain silent! We are the sound of the forgotten people, the freedom fighter in the cyber world and our main target is Zionism and Israhell.”
The annual attack, titled “#OpIsrael”, was announced several days in advance, with an online video threatening an “Electronic Holocaust.”
“As we did many times, we will take down your servers, government websites, Israeli military websites, and Israeli institutions,” it said.
A similar cyber attack on April 7 last year caused minimal damage.
The stated goal of the hackers is avenging Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians, by causing inconvenience and discomfort for Israeli citizens.
