Alhaji Mala Othman, chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in Borno State, has denied media reports that former governor Ali Sheriff was arrested in Cameroon.
Othman, in an interview with Daily Trust in Maiduguri, said the story was “a sheer mischief” planted by the opposition to tarnish the image of the former governor.
Asked if there was any arrest warrant on the former governor, the ANPP chairman said, “There is nothing. You see, I have always said it that some of these things that you hear or read have elements of mischief in them.”
“He was not arrested in Cameroon, not in Nigeria or in anywhere… he was not arrested by anybody. In fact, he was nowhere near Cameroon as at the time he was reported to have been arrested,” Othman said.
Othman said around the time of his purported arrest, Sheriff was shuttling between Ndjamena, Nigeria and Dubai. “So, he could not have been arrested because arrest is not done by proxy. One has to be physically there to be arrested,” he said.
He said Sheriff was pained when he heard of the purported arrest. “As a human being, things like this can be embarrassing, more so, giving the fact that he was not aware of any case against him by either the Nigerian authorities or with the authorities of any country.”
