The Sierra Leonean government on Tuesday said that the attacks launched by armed individuals on military barracks and other places Sunday in Freetown, the country’s capital, are a “failed attempted coup.”

The remarks were made by Minister of Information and Civic Education Chernor Bah at a press conference, saying 14 individuals, including 13 military personnel and one civilian, have been arrested.

The suspects are now helping the police in their investigations, he added.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, the armed individuals attacked the military barracks at Wilberforce and other locations including the Pademba Road Correctional Center, leading to a prison break.

The police are currently searching for those escaped prisoners, some of whom have voluntarily surrendered themselves to the prison authorities.
