Tanzanian president appoints new chief of defense forces

Tanzania’s commander-in-chief of the armed forces, President Samia Suluhu Hassan, on Wednesday appointed General Jacob John Mkunda as the country’s new chief of defense forces.

. Mkunda who was sworn in by President Hassan on Thursday replaces Gen. Venance Mabeyo who has retired, said a statement by the Directorate of Presidential Communications.

The statement said prior to his new appointment, Gen. Mkunda was the Chief of Operations and Training with the Tanzania People’s Defense Forces (TPDF).

According to the statement, President Hassan also appointed Gen. Salum Haji Othman as new Chief of Staff of TPDF.

Prior to his new appointment, Othman was Commissioner for Research and Military Development at the Ministry of Defense and National Service, said the statement. Enditem
