The Tema Health Directorate has joined the nationwide distribution of Long Lasting Insecticide Net (LLIN) to help prevent malaria.

Speaking to Ghana News Agency in Tema, Ms Elizabeth Appiah Bonnah, Malaria Focal Person of the Tema Metro Health Directorate, said the nationwide exercise was organized by the Malaria Control Programme.

The exercise starts from December 8th to 15th with a target of 74 distribution points in Tema.

Ms Bonnah said the target for the period is about 80 per cent for Tema and 90 per cent nationwide.

She said the LLIN would serve two purposes, to kill or repel the mosquitoes when they land on the treated net and also protect the person sleeping under it from mosquito bites.

She said 98 per cent of households were registered for the exercise; “we are now at the distribution stage and we want to cover 80 per cent of the populace in Tema.”

Ms Bonnah pleaded with the public not to use the LLIN for unprescribed purposes such as fencing their gardens and covering refuse, among others but should be used to prevent mosquito bites.

Ms Portia Efua Ntsiful, Health Promotion Officer Tema, said sleeping under the net was not easy but encouraged the public not to ignore it to help protect them against mosquito bites and from contracting malaria.

“Let us all help to stop malaria by sleeping under the treated mosquito nets,” she stressed.
