High Court Judge Wilson Musene granted Besigye a non cash bail of 100 million Uganda shillings (about 40,000 U.S. dollars) on grounds of advanced age.

The state alleges that Besigye and others at large between Feb. 20 and May 11 in diverse places of Uganda, formed an intention to compel by force or constrain the government of Uganda, as by law established to change its measures or counsel to the lawfully methods of acceding to the office of the president by overt acts and utterances.
A video purportedly showing Besigye being sworn in as the new president of Uganda placed on YouTube went viral and being shared on Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms.
Justice Musene cautioned Besigye not to disrupt peace in the East African country until his treason case is heard and disposed.
“The applicant is to execute a further bond of refraining of any acts of violence or breach of the peace until this case is heard and finalized. Failure to do so will lead to cancellation of bail,” said Musene.
The Judge ordered Besigye to be reporting to the deputy registrar of the criminal division of the high court once after a very two weeks starting on July 26.
Besigye, who came second in the Feb. 18 polls insists that he won the elections but the country’s Supreme Court upheld the official results indicating that Museveni, who has been in power for over 30 years, won the polls.
This is the second time that Besigye is charged with treason, a capital offence which is only punishable by death in Uganda. The first trial in 2005 was dropped. Enditem
