Much of the Ukrainian army is a NATO foreign legion meant to contain Russia, Russian President Vladimir Putin says.
“This is not the army. This is a foreign legion, in this case a foreign NATO legion,” Putin says about the volunteer battalions that he claims make up much of the government forces fighting in eastern Ukraine.
“They have completely different aims, like to achieve the geopolitical aim to contain Russia, which does absolutely not coincide with the national interest of the Ukrainian people,” he tells students in St Petersburg.
