The United Nations has announced the appointment of former chair of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) Charlotte Osei as International Elections Commissioner to Afghanistan, reports said here on Monday.

Osei is expected to join a team of other UN-appointed election experts from around the world to provide support for Afghanistan during the South Asian country’s election in September.

The team is expected to provide much needed technical support, capacity building and electoral best practice advice to the Election Complaints Commission and the Independent Electoral Commission charged with delivering a peaceful democratic process and credible elections.

The appointment the former Ghana EC Chair was confirmed by a Presidential Decree issued by the President of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani.

Osei is a lawyer with 25 years experience, and became chair of Ghana’s EC in 2015. She managed Ghana’s 2016 election which saw Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo unseat former president, John Dramani Mahama.

She was however removed from office by the Akufo-Addo led government as confusion erupted between Osei and her other commissioners.

Sub-regional group ECOWAS had earlier this year appointed Osei as member of its observer group which monitored the Nigerian general election. Enditem
