Using narcotics without authority lands tradesman in jail

An Accra Circuit Court on Thursday sentenced Mensah Mantey Maxwell, a ceiling Operator, to 12 months imprisonment for using narcotic drugs without authority.

In addition he has to pay GH 1,200 to the court.

The convict initially pleaded not guilty to the charges of possession of narcotic drug but later changed his plea.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Patrick Morkeh told the court presided over by Mr Francis Obiri that on October 18last year the Teshie Police Command led by the District Commander organised a swoop at Teshie and its environs.

DSP Morkeh said the Police visited Teshie Anomatu and found some young men gathered under a tree but on seeing the Police they took to their heels.

The convict, who was in the group, was arrested together with the exhibits in a black bag.

He said a search conducted revealed 18 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

He said during interrogation, the convict admitted ownership of the bag but denied its content. GNA
