A university is an institution of higher education and research, which grantsacademic degrees in a variety of subjects. The word ‘importance’, can mean the state or fact of being of great significance or value. Education is the process by which society deliberately transmits its accumulated knowledge, skills and values from one generation to another. The existence of such an institution has brought about a lot of mixed reactions from people all around the world over the importance or significance of it. But I as a student in a University believe that such an establishment has more merits it brings to society than a lot of people think about.
People do argue that university education is too expansive for the average citizen of a country to attend because it comes with a lot of expenses like accommodation and transportation. They further add that attending a university is long and tiring for people who have gone past the active age of their youth because it entails moving from one lecture to the other in a short matter of time. But the greatest of all which seems to belittle the idea of one attending a university of higher education is that a lot of people have made it in life, as in, getting rich, getting married and looking at how one explains success; well know people like Bill Gates and Paul Allen, founder and co-founder of Microsoft, Osei Kwame (Despite) owner of Despite Music shops, and former president of Ghana Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings all are looked up to as successful people who all are where they are without attending a university.
Attending an institution of higher learning like the university can bring a lot of advantages to the betterment of an individual, his/her family and the nation as a whole. If I attend and graduate from a University I have the opportunity to better myself in terms of experiencing the rich cultural and social practices of the nation through the interactions I have with other students from different cultural, social and financial backgrounds. Learning new things like how one greets in other ethnic group and how one should dress during social and religious functions are some of the benefits I am going to get as a person who attended a university.University education tends to be career specific and thus it prepares one adequately for the near future in the field of work. It’s not like secondary school where everyone had to learn the same thing. If one wanted to pursue a career in nursing one would have to learn a course that had nothing to do with nursing. With this we know that the importance of one attending an institution of higher education like a university is to widen the prospect of one gaining employment in the near future.
When one attends a university he/she gets the required skills to fill the gap in the job market.In the hierarchy of respect in the traditional society, one gains respect according to the age and position one holds in society. Attending a university now forms part of the criteria for one earning respect and being assigned specific responsibilities in society because university graduates are seen as people who have taken their time to follow instructions in school making them responsible and they can transfer the skills they have learn’t to their respective job fields. Examples of these are chiefs and assemblymen who are where they are because they had the added advantage of a university degree.The nation as a whole gets a lot of benefits from universities because the people who are trained and taught in the schools graduate and become the next civil servants and private entrepreneurs. When universities produce graduates they work and pay taxes that the government uses to build roads, hospitals, schools and provide social amenities for the whole nation.Decision making is an integral part of our life. We have to take decisions throughout our lives and sometimes, decision making can be a very tough and challenging process.
It can leave us perplexed and often wondering, as to what is the right choice. University education is significant, because it enable us to take the right decisions and prevents losses.Graduates of universities do serve as role models for the youth of the country because attending a university is the highest point one gets in his educational exploits. With this young people get motivated follow in the footsteps of these graduates because there is added respect and opportunities that comes ones way. Example of a person with respect in the field of education is Kofi Annan, the past UN Secretary General.In conclusion, even though people have different opinions on the importance of university education. If you would like to get respect, honor and favor in front of your family and society, attend a university
