Zambia will hold tripartite elections on August 11 to choose a president, lawmakers and councilors.
Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Justice Esau Chulu said all those aspiring to stand as presidential candidates will be required to meet all the requirements for one to aspire for the position in line with the amended constitution.
Among the requirements include one to have completed senior secondary education and be able to have 100 supporters from each of the country’s 10 provinces.
The electoral chief said the campaign period for the general elections will run from May 16 to August 10 and that parliament will be dissolved around May.
Incumbent President Edgar Lungu of the governing Patriotic Front (PF) seeks to get a full five-year term after having won a presidential election last January called after the death of President Michael Sata.
He faces challenge from the country’s main opposition leader, Hakainde Hichilema of the United Party for National Development (UPND). Enditem
