Zambian President Edgar Lungu has appointed a new head of the country’s electoral governing body, his office said in a statement obtained by Xinhua on Wednesday.

The Zambian leader has appointed Justice Esau Chulu as the new chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) which is subject to ratification by parliament.
The electoral chief, who has been one of the commissioners of the electoral governing body, takes over from Justice Ireen Mambilima who was appointed as the country’s new chief judge.
“Justice Chulu has distinguished himself very well during his tenure as commissioner and during his earlier career on the bench, ” the Zambian leader said.
The Zambian leader has also appointed new commissioners of the electoral body, Emily Sikazwe, a gender and governance activist, and David Matongo, a former lawmaker and businessman, the statement added.
“The two nominees are of high professional and personal integrity and I hope they will work towards enhancing the impeccable credentials of the Electoral Commission,” he said.
The Zambian leader has since urged lawmakers to support the ratification of the trio. Enditem
