The Ghana Water and Sanitation Agency (GWSA) has presented assorted electronic equipment to five districts and one Municipal Assembly to help improve data management system of water in the Upper West Region.
The equipment procured under the Sustainable Rural Water and Sanitation Project and included printers, scanners, desktop and dell computers, monitors, canon and APC UPS.
They were presented to the Wa Municipal Assembly, Lambussie, Sissala West, Sissala East, Wa East, Wa West and Nadowli District Assemblies.
Mr. Worlanyo Siabi, Regional Director of CWSA, who presented the items to the assemblies, urged them to use the equipment to enhance data collection and monitoring of the programme in the communities.
He said the region had made tremendous achievements in the water sector, covering about 78 per cent potable water delivery to the people.
He, however, expressed concern that equipment to collect accurate data or monitor the operations of the water facilities had been a challenge and urged the assemblies to use the equipment to capture the required data.
Alhaji Amidu Sulemana, Upper West Regional Minister who received the items, said the region had done well in the provision of water but lamented about the poor sanitation situation in the region.
He said the Region had been able to achieve just a little lower than 10 per cent coverage of improved sanitation and expressed worry about the habit of open defecation practised in the communities.
He called on the people to desist from the habit and urged developers to endeavour to provide toilet facilities in their buildings.
The Regional Minister also urged the assemblies to maintain the equipment to prolong their lifespan.
