A dozen of overloaded buses carrying 900 Burundian nationals fleeing fear violence in their villages have arrived in Busegera, a district located in the southeastern Rwanda, an official source revealed Thursday in Kigali.
Most of the new arrivals are children and women, according to the Rwandan ministry of Disaster management and Refugees affairs.
It is said that they are fleeing possible attacks by pro- government youths who have been unleashing terror in the rural areas.
Burundi is going to hold the polls in May for parliamentary elections, and then in June for presidential elections.
Tension is high ahead of the elections as President Pierre Nkurunziza has decided to run for a third term, in violation of the Arusha deal for peace and reconciliation.
According to the Rwandan government, the total number of asylum seekers from Burundi arriving in the country over the last three weeks is estimated to be around 5900 people. Enditem
