Assemblies Entreated To Champion Welfare Of Physically-Challenged

Mr. Sylvester Barima Antwi, Founder of the Physically Challenged Action Foundation Training and Rehabilitation Centre, has entreated the decentralized assemblies to be committed to the welfare of the physically-challenged.

He said they should ensure that the two per cent of the District Assemblies’ Common Fund (DACF) meant to aid persons with disability to acquire skills and also set up their own businesses were utilized effectively.

This would help empower them to lead meaningful lives, while contributing positively to the nation’s development process instead of resorting to the streets to beg for alms for a living.

Mr. Antwi was addressing the 18th graduation ceremony of the Centre at Maase in the Offinso Municipality, a ceremony which saw seven physically-challenged youth pass out and received certificates in sewing and shoe-making.

This brings to about 2, 000 the number of such persons who had so far been trained by the Centre to acquire employable skills in batik, tie and dye, weaving, carpentry and livestock production.

The beneficiaries were given start-up capital and working tools to venture into self-employment.

Since the last two decades, the Centre had served as a motivation to the physically-challenged, providing them with leadership training and also mentored them to aspire for excellence in their lives in spite of their physical disability.

Mr. Antwi said the Centre was currently constructing an administration and a state-of-the-art Junior High School (JHS) blocks, and appealed to philanthropists to come to the their aid for their successful completion.

Nana Wiafe Akenten, Omanhenehene of Offinso, in a message delivered on his behalf, advised the public not to discriminate against persons with disability.

He also urged parents who give birth to children with disability not to neglect them, but collaborate with experts for their upbringing to tap their potentials.
