B/A Mortuary Workers Join Nationwide Strike

The Mortuary workers in Sunyani has joined the Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MoWAG) nationwide strike to protest against low salaries and poor working conditions.

A visit to the Sunyani Regional Hospital and the Sunyani Municipal Hospital by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Tuesday morning indicated that corpses for preservation had been abandoned because the mortuary men had deserted the respective mortuaries of the two health facilities.

MoWAG has embaked on a nationwide strike to compel the Ghana Health Service and the Ministry of Health to offer them appreciable salary increase and improve their conditions of service because negotiations to that effect have failed.

The GNA gathered that some dead bodies had been left unattended to at the wards with patients on admission at the two hospitals.

Meanwhile family members of the dead who could not afford the charges of private morgues were also seen hanging around the hospitals’ wards hoping that grace might fall on them to have the corpses of their loved ones preserved for them.

But other families with the financial means arranged to send the corpses of their dead relatives to the private mortuary at Mantukwa.

All efforts to talk to the authorities of the two hospitals to ascertain what they were doing about the situation proved futile.
