Heartland Football Club of Nigeria has qualified for the third round of this year’s CAF Confederation Cup. The Owerri-based side pipped Unisport Nkam of Cameroon 2-1 at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in the return leg of the second round of the competition. Both sides played out a barren draw in the first leg a fortnight ago in Douala, Cameroon.
After a goalless first half, Kabir Umar broke the deadlock barely four minutes into the second half with a beautiful header from close range beating on-rushing Haschou Kerrido in goal for Unisport.
Kalu Orji failed to make it two for Heartland when he shot wide inches from the goal line after beating the goalkeeper. The Cameroon side, however, fought back gamely with 10 men after Ngano Ayo Herve was red carded in the 66th minute for a second bookable offence.
Owundi Benard equalized for Unisport in the 75th minute with a superbly taken free kick few metres from the penalty box. The 10-man Cameroon team held on to the 1-1 scores until the last minute into the added time when substitute, Bredan Ogbu, sneaked home the winning goal from sustained pressure from Heartland.
