The 42-year-old former junior coach has agreed a deal until June 30, 2018 in what Hanover hopes will be a first step in achieving immediate Bundesliga promotion.

“It will be a challenge,” Stendel said. “It’s an incredibly attractive task and that’s why I am delighted that the management has put its trust in me.”

Hanover’s relegation was sealed on Sunday with three games remaining in the Bundesliga, beginning with Schalke at home on Saturday. The club drops out of the top flight for the fifth time in its history.

Stendel was appointed interim coach at the beginning of the month after the dismissal of Thomas Schaaf, and has achieved one victory and two draws since then.

Apart from a short absence he has been at the club since 1999 as a player, assistant coach and junior coach.

Club chief executive Martin Bader said Stendel had proven his abilities over several years with the juniors and had shown in the past few weeks he could lead the first-team squad.

By appointing Stendel the club also wanted to show the importance it attached to “identification with and emotional understanding for the club,” he added.
