This move according to the Centre will whip up public enthusiasm which has been dwindling over the years and increase participation in the upcoming local elections; a concern it shared jointly with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD).
?Current efforts by the National Commission for Civic Education to use jingles and songs as well as that of the Ministry of Local Government to set up an inter-agency committee to whip up enthusiasm in the upcoming local level elections are commendable. However, all the above efforts will not yield the needed results unless the current voter turnout gap in Ghana?s local level elections which stands at less than 30 per cent is increased?, Dr. Antwi Danso disclosed.

The CLGA suggested that to increase the turnout to the level of the presidential and parliamentary elections, ?the CLGA requests government to declare the upcoming local government election day a public day? since it had a strong conviction that once the day is declared a holiday, with increased voter turnout, local democracy will be deepened along the same lines of national democracy.
The statement stated emphatically that it was the position of the CLGA that in order to give true meaning to Article 35 (6d) of the 1992 Constitution which states that ?the State shall take appropriate measures to make democracy a reality?affording all possible opportunities o the people to participate in decision making at every level of national live and in government?.
?Declaring Tuesday March 3, 2015 a public holiday for the conduct of the District Assembly and Unit committee elections throughout the country this year is one obvious way of showing national commitment to deepening decentralization, local democracy and popular participation in governance?, a statement signed by Dr. Antwi Danso noted.
