The President of the Association of Ghana Solar Industries (AGSI), Mr. Omane Frimpong, has called for investment into the sustainability of renewable energy sources to enhance the energy sector of the country.
According to him, it is far expensive to provide remedial solutions to effects of climate change than to invest in renewable energy sources.
He added that it is more expensive to provide relief items to victims of effects of climate change such as flood and windstorm than to invest in solar energy and other renewable alternative energy sources.
He made this call at the end of the Association’s Annual General Meeting held in Accra earlier this week where he lamented over the use of firewood and kerosene as sources of fuel by peasant farmers and rural folks.
The continual usage of firewood, he added, has resulted in the felling of trees and subsequent burning for fuel and use of kerosene as activities that add to the effects of climate change and carbon emission.
He argued that if the country does not take immediate pragmatic steps to offer access to renewable energy sources such as solar, many people will continue to use adversarial means with a negative impact on the environment.
The AGSI president further appealed and proposed to banks and other micro-finance institutions to put in place lasting measures that would provide access to credit facilities to peasant farmers and rural folks to enable them purchase solar systems and lanterns for use.
He disclosed that the global financial giants are currently putting pressure on the banks and other financial institutions to provide credit facilities to institutions and people to promote purchase and use of renewable or clean energy sources.
He called on the banks and other financial institutions operating in the country to provide credit facilities to industries and individuals for renewable energy.
The ministry of energy and its affiliates were urged to also ensure that such provisions are made to encourage the usage of LPG.
