Twenty-seven (27) farmers, together with two agricultural extension agents and an institution, have been honored with prizes for their outstanding contribution to the growth of agriculture in the Obuasi municipality.
Fifty-nine (59) year Samuel Edmundson from Asonkore, adjudged the overall best farmer for the year, received a tri-cycle and a number of agricultural tools.
This was at the municipal farmers’ day held at Jimiso-Kakraba.
Mr. Elijah Adansi-Bonah, the Municipal Chief Executive, encouraged the youth to take advantage of the government’s flagship agriculture programme “Planting for food and jobs” to improve their economic situation.
He gave the assurance that farmers would continue to receive strong support from the government by way of the supply of quality and high yielding seeds and other inputs to boost production.
He announced that 42 farmers in the municipality had been selected for training in artificial cocoa pollination to increase crop yield and returns.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Obuasi East, Dr. Boakye-Yiadom, advised the youth to shift from the over-reliance on mining to farming and said it was a rewarding business.
Mr. Ankapong Fofie, the assembly member of Odumasi, appealed to the government to rehabilitate the road stretch from Jimiso-Kakraba Junction to Jimiso-Kakraba community, which he said was in bad shape.
