Inventor Wins $500,000 Prize: Every year, the Lemelson-MIT Program awards a prolific inventor with a $500,000 prize. This year’s winner is Stephen Quake, the professor of Bioengineering and Applied Physics at Stanford and investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
Quake has more than 80 patents and four companies to his name. Among his inventions is a biological equivalent to the integrated circuit, a technology that could measure and test drugs. Quake is also involved in helping students develop a deeper knowledge of science. He launched the “Inventor’s Workshop” for San Francisco-area high school students. The program teaches kids how to become inventors, helps them express their creativity in solving real-world problems.
