Nigeria’s central north Plateau state has culled more than 400,000 birds since a bird flu outbreak four months ago, an official said on Thursday.
John Dasar, Poultry Farmers Association of Nigeria’s chairman for north Plateau, said at a sensitization forum in Jos, the state capital, that at least 160 poultry farms had been quarantined as the virus is prevalent in the state.
“Between January and now, more than 160 farms were affected by this dreaded disease and were quarantined, with 153 of them completely shot down,” he said.
Dasar said poultry business has sustained many local families, appealing to the state government to look into the plights of poultry farmers and prevent the industry from a collapse.
However, he accused some farmers of carelessness in handling the situation, which he said resulted in further spread of bird flu in the state. Enditem
