The Namibia heritage council has called upon the nation to actively take part in preserving its heritage or risk losing a source of identity and enrichment.

Speaking at the launch of Namibia Heritage Week Monday night, Education, Arts and Culture Ministry Deputy Permanent Secretary Veno Kauaria said that Namibians needed to safeguard their natural heritage as well as be actively involved in the promotion, development and preservation of their heritage.

“There is no doubt that out heritage is faced with dangers and threats due to globalization and new technological means of communication and other social evils thus it is important to knowledge and skills in order to keep our culture alive,” she said.

“Our heritage is faced with challenges where youngsters feel that they don’t need to obey or follow their tradition anymore. They instead want to do things according to the modern way. We need to protect our heritage, if not then it will disappear,” Kauaria said.

The Namibian Heritage Week will be celebrated across the country from September 18 to 24 under the theme “We’re in it together.”

During this week, events such as tours, movie screenings as well as a traditional cuisine festival and guide tours will be showcased around the country. Enditem
