The National Peace Council has condemned comments made by a member of governing National Democratic Congress? communications team to the effect that, the party will not surrender power to the opposition New Patriotic Party even if it loses the ongoing election petition case.

According to the Chairman of the Council, Most Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante, the comments contradict the position by President John Mahama who has declared his readiness to accept the verdict of the Supreme Court on the case.

Stephen Atubiga said on Asempa FM?s Ekosii Sen programme on Tuesday that: ?We are prepared to meet the NPP boot for boot. We are ever ready; we will not hand over?.

He said even if the NPP wins the court case; it will be ?a bitter-sweet victory? because ?Ghana cannot contain all of us?.

The NPP represented by its flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo and two others are in court challenging the validity of the declaration of President John Mahama as winner of the 2012 elections.

The petitioners have tendered in evidence what they claim are irregularities in the 2012 elections and is praying the court to overturn the verdict of the Electoral Commission (EC).

But Stephen Atubiga on Ekosii Sen said the foot-soldiers of the NDC are prepared to protect the presidency even at the peril of their lives.

Reacting to the comments on Badwam programme on Adom TV Wednesday, Most Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante cautioned that, neither the NDC nor the NPP have monopoly over violence and urged followers of the two leading parties to abide by the commitments made by their leaders.

According to him, Ghana is not ready for war and that all must guard against comments that have the potential to plunge the nation into a state of anarchy.

He, therefore, appealed to religious leaders, traditional rulers as well as the media, to preach against violence in order to sustain the peace being enjoyed in the country.
