The place was like a reality show house, with a lot of musical talent buzzing around. They came in all packages, loud, quiet, hip hop, highlife, reggae, dancehall… With each one trying to out shine the other. However, there was always one person in the corner, either writing music, listening to music or simply observing. This was how i noticed Faisal.
A few months after I moved on from the company, I began to get messages from Faisal. His hunger, zeal and determination were ablaze. However, his humility was not compromised. He’d always send me songs and give me updates on his career. These songs weren’t the normal deal, they were different; sliky, soulful, laced with emotions. You could feel each inch of the ghetto in his voice, you could hear the masses in his lyrics.
The reggae/dancehall act, had unnderstood the power of his genre, to make change and convict conscience. Even when he spoke, the will to make change happen was eminent. “I’m a ghetto youth whose songs aim for everyday lives of society and also governmental issues at the international levels. Focusing on Africa in particular”, Faisal Nati said when I sat down for a chat. Faisal seemed very focused. He explained that his music ministry, is in three folds; To educate, entertain and give hope.
Listening to a recent Rocky Dawuni interview, it wasn’t difficult to close my eyes and imagine the voice I was hearing was that of Faisal Nati. The drive to represent change and give the continent great musical productions can be seen at an equal percentile in both men.
“I don’t want to promise anyone that I’d win a Grammy. But if Rocky Dawuni can be nominated, the future is only bright for the youth. I want to make music- good conscious vibes. That will make enemies dance together”, said Faisal.
