President Goodluck Jonathan has asked Malawi to supply Nigeria with rice.

Jonathan during his visit to the country made the request at the launching of Malawi’s cassava commercialisation programme.

?I would like to take this opportunity to ask Malawi to start supplying us with rice. I understand that this country grows a lot of rice which can be exported to Nigeria,? Jonathan was quoted as saying.

The President also stressed the need for both countries to exchange scientists in a bid to enhance the production of rice and cassava, adding that the mutual agreement would also help the economies of both countries in the long term.

He among others engaged President Joyce Banda on issues of bilateral relations.

Jonathan also promised that his government would provide technical personnel to Malawi regarding the Lake Malawi, fuel-survey project, which is currently under construction.

?We will be delighted to provide Malawi with some technical help to drive their oil deposit survey,? Jonathan said. ?After all we are Africans; and as such I don?t see any objection to resist helping our friends who would need our assistance such as the one you have mentioned.?

Malawi started surveying on Lake Malawi a couple of months ago despite having border dispute with Tanzania.
