The 1977 year group of the Navrongo Senior High School has furnished the Home Economics Department of the school to facilitate teaching and learning of practical lessons.
They procured Food and Nutrition Practical Equipment numbering over 35 different sets made up of gas cookers, blenders, food processors, set of sauce pans, serving plates, pyrex bowls and frying pans among others is valued at GHC 26,000.
In addition to the equipment, the year group also renovated the Home Economics Department block.
Presenting the items to the Management of the School, Mrs Georgina Amidu , the treasurer of the group, said the year group was touched when the management of the school mentioned the lack of equipment for the Home Economic Department as one of the major challenges confronting the school.
She said as part of the 40th anniversary of the group, it decided to help address some of the challenges of the school by contributing to procure the items and also rejuvenated the Speech and Prize Giving Day.
Ms Kangyi Easter, the Head of the Home Economics Department, said apart from the students buying charcoal and ice block and cooking utensils for practical lessons, she as the Head of Department , had to carry some of her household equipment to the school to aid the practical training.
“We are very grateful to the 1977 year group of NAVASCO. This will help enhance teaching and learning of Food and Nutrition in the school, to enable our students to do well in their West Africa Senior High School Certificate Examination”, she said.
She said many of the students of the school who studied the course had set up their own enterprises and had even gone ahead to engage others in their outfit.
She said all the 59 students who sat for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) last year excelled and the school obtained 100 per cent in the Food and Nutrition Subject.
“The school is currently preparing 102 Food and Nutrition students to write WASSCE and we hope that the equipment will help improve upon the students’ performance significantly”, she said.
The Headmistress of the School, Mrs Francisca Yizura Afoko, who received the items on behalf of the Management of the School, entreated the other year groups to emulate the example of the 1977 year group.
The occasion which coincided with the 2017 General meeting of the Union of Old students of Navrongo School known as “NABIA” was also used to adopt a constitution of the Association.
