Seidu Tawolobeye, who was shot in the assassination attempt on the life of the Paramount Chief of Wa, Fuseini Pelpuo has been confirmed dead by officials of the Wa Regional Hospital.
In a singular act of bravery which possibly saved the life of the Wa Naa, but sadly, resulted in his demise, Seidu Tawolobeye threw himself into the line of fire, targeted at the Wa Chief.
Ghananewslink.com earlier gathered that there had been an attempt to kill the Wa Naa, after he was officially ushered into the Wa Palace.
The assailant missed his target when Seidu Tawolobeye rushed to the rescue of his Chief, lending himself to the shot.
He was taken to the Wa Regional Hospital for treatment but passed away hours later.
The Chief had been unable to live in the Palace after his enskinment. He only recently got the approval of the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs, who recognised him as the substantive Chief of the traditional area.
There are four royal gates in the Wa Chieftaincy system, these are, the Yijiihi, the Najari, the Jonyuohi and Nakpaaha/Pelpuo gates. The gates take turns to enskin a Chief upon the death of another.
The Ghananewslink.com correspondent BMJ Seidu, who was at the scene, said the shooter, who eye witnesses identified as Tawfik Bugu fled the Palace after the shot and is still at large.
He reports that a large number of police and military personnel have been deployed at the scene. And calm has been restored. There seem to be no threat of a reprisal.
Meanwhile, Seidu Tawolobeye is being treated at the Wa Regional Hospital.
The predecessor of the current Wa chief (Wa-Naa), the late Wa-Naa, Alhaji Yakubu Seidu Soale II, died on Monday, 4 September, 2006 in the morning and was buried at the Wala Royal Mausoleum after Muslim and traditional burial rites.
The late Wa-Naa, aged 81. Although he was enskinned paramount chief in 2001, he was eventually outdoored in 2005 because of litigations over the paramouncy. The Supreme Court later upheld an earlier judgment in his favour by the Regional House of Chiefs.
