
The Games were the first held in South America and although there were lots of empty seats and the diving pool turned green, the event went off relatively smoothly.
“We have shown that we are able to do things well despite all the criticism from elsewhere,” he told Spain’s El Mundo newspaper on Wednesday.
“The Games were a success, even if before the Olympics there were worries in Brazil that we would not be ready in time.”
The 75-year-old missed the opening ceremony due to ill health.
