Black Queens attacking midfielder, Portia Boakye has expressed surprise upon hearing that she has been nominated for the 2015 African Women Footballer of the year.
The silky attacking midfielder has been one of the rising stars in the senior female national football team and her performance has caught a lot of attentions.
The Fabulous Ladies mercurial midfielder won the hearts of Ghanaians when her solitary strike against Cameroun won the gold medal for the Black Queens at the 2015 All Africa Games held in Congo Brazzaville a few months ago.
Portia was also in the news when Ghana drew 1-1 with Egypt in Cairo during the qualification for the African Women’s Championship held in Namibia earlier this year.
Reacting to the news, Portia told Ghanasoccernet.com that she was surprised at the news.
“The news came as a surprise to me because I wasn’t expecting that big recognition. But all the same we have to give thanks to God. What makes me happy is that my performance has been recognized and I think that I will be building on that.”
She added: “It has been the dream of every player to be recognized and I believe my other colleagues will put up their best in order to also get a recognition like mine. I’m optimistic it shall come to pass,” she added.
Portia Boakye will be competing with likes of Gabrielle Onguéné (Cameroon), Gaelle Enganamouit (Cameroon), Ngozi Ebere (Nigeria) and N’rehy Tia Ines (Cote d’Ivoire).
