The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP), has tasked the presidency to recover the over 400 billion dollars Nigeria?s looted fund.
This was contained in a communiqu? signed by CNPP?s spokesman, Mr. Osita Okechukwu in Abuja. “We demand as a matter of urgency national importance for President Goodluck Jonathan to request for the recovery of over 400 billion dollars fleeced off our treasury in the last two decades.?
Okechukwu said that the CNPP was reacting to a report by the Attorney General of the Federation, Mohammed Bello Adoke, that the Federal Government had recovered about N5.5 billion looted fund. The report added that the negotiation had reached advanced stage to recover N36.7 billion fund looted by Sani Abacha.
The CNPP urged President Jonathan to “utilise the window opened by the United Nations Convention against Corruption, which bound countries to render mutual legal assistance in gathering and transferring evidence.??
Chapter five of the Convention makes asset recovery explicitly a fundamental principle of the convention. “The looted funds if recovered will be needed to invest in critical infrastructure, revamp our decayed social services and stem gross unemployment.??
The CNPP also appealed for effective liaison and communication with targeted countries to hasten the pace of recovery of funds siphoned out of Nigeria?s treasury.
