Mr. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, Mayor of Accra
The Ayawaso Central Sub-Metro election is slated for Wednesday March 7, 2012, but there is a raging disquiet among some members in the constituency over issues that threaten to disturb the unity among assembly members in the constituency.
Key among the concerns, which was reported to The Chronicle, include allegations that Victor Quashie, the former Sub-metro Chairman had hijacked all the AMA toilets in the constituency and is using the proceeds to fund the parliamentary ambitions of National Democratic Congress parliamentary candidate, William Antwi–Adjei.
According to the allegations, Mr Quashie had contracted most of the public toilets in the constituency to individual businessmen, much to the displeasure of some members in the constituency.
This issue is said to have been reported to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and Mr. Quashie was asked to clear his name, of the issues raised against him.
The Chief Whip of the Assembly, one Norgan, collaborated the report to The Chronicle when contacted, but could not establish whether Mr. Quashie had produced the relevant documentation to clear his name of the charges levelled against him.
But when The Chronicle contacted Mr. Quashie, he refuted the allegations, stating that some individuals who feel threatened by his resolve to contest the chairmanship position have decided to malign him by peddling untruths.
Mr Abdul Aziz Sununu, an aspirant for the chairmanship position of the sub-metro, who also spoke to The Chronicle, noted that even the criteria for selecting the advisors for the sub-metro was fraught with irregularities.
He said as a normal practice, professionals who can help to develop the sub-metro are the ones who are appointed as counsellors, but unfortunately people who have know very little about the local government Act have been appointed to serve as counsellors.
Stay tuned for more details on the struggle for control over the management of public toilets in the Ayawaso Central Constituency.
