Essipong (W/R), Dec 10, GNA ? Authorities of Twin-City Special School for Intellectuals and Disabilities (TCSSID) at Essipong in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis have appealed to the public to assist handicapped children to develop their God given talents.

Mr Wisdom Djokoto, an Instructor of the TCSSID, said retarded children must not be disregarded as with a little support and special care from parents and guardians they could be developed into useful citizens rather than to be ignored to become liabilities.

He said this when the Joint Men?s Fellowships of the Catholic, Presbyterian, Evangelical Presbyterian and Methodist churches at Kwesimintim area in Takoradi presented items worth GH?1, 200.00 to the TCSSID on Monday.

The items were two maxi bags of rice, sugar, beverages, toiletries, provisions, detergents and cooking oil.

Mr Djokoto said TCSSIC is a government subvented institution but feeding grants were irregular.

He said logistical constraints had resulted in the limited intake of children whose present population stands at 110, with 18 teachers and 36 other staffs.

?We have backlog of 25 children who cannot be admitted because of inadequate facilities as well as feeding and funding,? he said.

Mr Djokoto also complained about the failure of parents to visit their children to monitor their performance while some fail to come for them even when school vacates thus adding additional responsibilities on the school authorities.

The institution, he said, admits children from six to 14 years and trains them to develop their potential as some are able to learn vocations.

He said he was grateful to the fellowship and said the gifts would enable the authorities fete the children during the Christmas.

Mr James K. Dadzie, chairman of the group which made the presentation, said they were moved by the plight of the unfortunate children to support them.
