“We want to net all illegal immigrants staying in the country,” said Kitwanga in reference to tens of hundreds of immigrants, especially Somalis and Ethiopians, who are arrested in the country on daily basis without valid travel and residence permits.

TanzaniaThe crackdown comes only three days after police in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam arrested 42 Ethiopian nationals for entering in the country illegally.

Tanzania has been a popular destination and route for illegal immigrants from several other African countries, most of them originating from Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia.

The minister said in 2013 a similar operation was conducted in the country but it was halted after human rights activists said there were human rights violations.

Kitwanga said this time around human rights will be observed in conducting the operation. Enditem
