Tensions calm down after rebels and DR Congo armed confrontation

Uneasy calm was restored on Tuesday evening in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) after violent clashes between the army and rebels that left six people dead and three others injured in Beni territory.

The interim military spokesman for Sokola 1 operation Mac Azukayi said after several hours of fighting, the army managed to push back fighters of the Ugandan rebel group, Allied Democratic Forces, who had launched simultaneous attacks to recapture some of the positions they held in Makembi, Jericho and Chuchubo villages in Beni territory.

rebel“We urge the people to return to their homes, because the army has taken control in all the zones that had been attacked by the Ugandan rebels,” Azukayi said.

Civilians of the affected zones had started fleeing towards Beni town and Orientale province.
The military spokesman said two soldiers died in the fighting, three others were injured and four assailants were equally killed.

Sources from the zone who spoke to Xinhua on phone, said the assailants managed to loot from several homes and also raped two women during the clashes.

Military sources in North Kivu province said additional reinforcements have been deployed in the area to support the forces on the ground. Enditem
