TEWU Begins Strike Over SSPP

Members of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) have begun a nationwide strike effective today, January 18, 2016 over the implementation of the Single Spine Pay Policy.

The Union has accused the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) of failing to address their concerns over the pay policy hence their action.

TEWU members said, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission has done nothing to deliver on its promise of closing the gap between salaries of senior and junior staff of public universities.

The Chairman of TEWU, Peter Lumor said, Fair Wages as at last May asked Vice Chancellors Ghana (VCG) and TEWU to go and do something. “… we have done it and the report has been submitted to Fair Wages by VCG. VCG says, ‘Yes, what TEWU is saying is true, we can do ABCD’. VCG wrote in November calling for a meeting (but) Fair Wages will not acknowledge. VCG (wrote) 7 January 2016 (but) Fair Wages will not acknowledge so TEWU is now fed up.”

Meanwhile, the TEWU strike will interrupt the 2016 academic year across all public universities, but FWSC said it is yet to officially respond to the TEWU strike action.
