Brandon-Lee and Tony-Lee Thulsie were stopped from boarding a plane in 2015 for allegations that they wanted to join the Islamic State (ISIS).

The twins were arrested last month for alleged links with terror groups and for illegal weapon possession.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the twins plotted to bomb Jewish and U.S. institutions in South Africa.

The NPA also alleges that the twins were in contact with a high ranking person in the ISIS.

Their attorney, Advocate Annelene van den Heever has been battling to secure their freedom, arguing that their arrest was unlawful.

Van den Heever has argued that the police did not have enough evidence or an arrest warrant when they arrested the twins.

While the twins were appearing in court, some Johannesburg residents, who stay in the neighbourhood where the two twins come from, were demonstrating outside the court, calling for them to be set free.

The residents were putting on white t-shirts written “free our boys”, and “free the Thulsie twins”. Some held a banner written “give them bail”.

Fared Domingo, one of those who were demonstrating, told Xinhua that they believe the twins are innocent. Enditem
