Security needs to be tightened in the troubled Anglophone regions of Cameroon before Sunday’s partial legislative elections rerun, Chairman of the Electoral Board of the country’s electoral body Elections Cameroon (Elecam), Enow Abrams Egbe, said on Tuesday.
“As for the forces of defence and security, I am entreating them to remain vigilant, such as to afford stakeholders and electors a secure polling environment,” said Egbe during a meeting to evaluate the preparedness and readiness of Elecam before the elections rerun.
The election materials and documents have already reached the regions, he said.
The rerun will take place in 11 constituencies of the crisis-prone English-speaking regions, which represent 13 of the total 180 seats of Cameroon’s National Assembly.
The elections in these constituencies were nullified on February 25 by the country’s Constitutional Council, citing irregularities during polling caused by violence of armed separatists.
Armed separatists have been clashing with government forces to establish an independent state in Cameroon’s Anglophone regions since 2017.
Cameroon held legislative and municipal elections on February 9. The ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement won a sweeping victory in both elections, according to official results. Enditem
