Elections 2016: Cracks In Agona East NDC Deepens

With barely three months to the general elections, the ruling National Democratic Congress [NDC] in the Agona East Constituency in the Central Region is faced with serious division which has the tendency of cracking the bone of the party in the area, if care is not taken.

Sources within the party are appointing accusing finger on the Member of Parliament for the area, Maame Pokua Sawyer for manipulating the party to achieve her parochial interest.

According to the sources, the MP, Maame Pokua Sawyer managed to get the Presiding Member [PM] of the Agona East District Assembly, Mr. Samuel Richard Ziggah who is said to be one of the stalwarts of the party in the Constituency voted against to pave way for one of her cohorts to be elected as the Presiding Member.

According to the source, the newly elected Presiding Member is not someone who has any indepth knowledge in party politics unlike Mr. Samuel Richard Ziggah who served as Presiding Member for three consequetive terms and also served the NDC party in many capacities in the Constituency and is currently the National Trustee of the National Association of Local
Authority Ghana [NALAG] as well as Assembly Member for Ninta/Ofoase Electoral Area for the fourth time running.

Mr. Ziggah’s reason for falling victim to the MP’s prey, according the sources stem from the fact that he stood against all initial attempt by the MP Maame Pokua Sawyer to get the then District Chief Executive [DCE] Martin Luther Obeng removed from office because he, the DCE declared his support for Mr. Kwesi Ahwoi who contested the MP during the primaries in 2008.

Indications are that supporters of the party in the Constituency may vote what has come to be known in political palance as ‘’skirt and blouse’’ by voting for the president and voting against the MP, if immediate steps are not taken to address the impasse once and for all before elections.
