Juapong Ablakwa FC Wins MP’s Unity Cup tournament

The Juapong Ablakwa FC, was on Sunday crowned winners of the Member of Parliament (MP’s) Unity Cup tournament when they beat Battor Delali FC 5-4 on penalties.

Monaco FC of Mekpe also beat Togome Star Brothers FC in a penalty kick by four goals to two to secure the third position in the tournament.

The tournament which started on October 2, 2015 with 57 teams from six traditional areas in the North Tongu Constituency ended with drumming and dancing to show their appreciation, peace and unity among the people.

The winning team took home GHC 1,000, a set of Jersey and two footballs whiles the first runner – up took away GHC 500, a set of jersey and one football with the second runner – taking home GHC 400, a set of jersey and one football, whilst the fourth team went away with a GHC 300, a set of jersey and a football.

Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, MP for the area said the tournament was initiated to foster the unity in the constituency and to fight the challenges confronting them.

He said the tournament after this year will also be an annual affair to identify younger players with talent and to develop the talents to the higher National levels.

Mr Ablakwa said football is not only now entertaining but also an economic adventure that could develop and boost the country’s economic fortunes.

He said the winning team will keep the the trophy and will re-produce it next year for the 2016 tournament and any team which picks it three times will keep it.

The MP who is also a Deputy Minister of Education in-charge of Tertiary Education said apart from fostering unity, education and health are also some of the priorities among his development agenda.

He mention some achievements made by him in the educational sector of the constituency which includes kindergarten infrastructure projects at Alabonu, Avedzi, Workpoe, Aveyime, Dadome, Agorxor, Degome, Klamadaboye, Kumasi, Mekpe and Horkpo.

The Deputy Minister also donates a pick – up vehicle to the District the Director of Education, Eight motor bikes to Circuit Supervisors, Scholarships to over 200 students, donated over 400 laptops to schools in the constituency and incentives to best performing teachers.

He expressed his appreciation to the chiefs, traditional authorities, and religious leaders for their support and cooperation given him and thanked the Organizing Committee and the participating teams for a good work.

In an interview, the Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Mr Elias Abiwu, noted that there were a lot talented players in the constituency and that the tournament will help bring out more talented players in the constituency.

He said this was a wake – up call for the losing teams and the non participating teams to boost their players ability in order to win the trophy in the coming years.

Mr Elias who is also the Constituency Youth Organizer said the MP has resurrected the spirit of the football teams in the constituency and that this will encourage more people into football.

He thanked the MP for the love he has shown the constituents and thanked the participating teams for the commitment shown and cooperation.
