Authorities in Saudi Arabia have retrieved large quantities of Kola nut from some Ghanaian pilgrims at the Jeddah Airport.

Kola nut is regarded as a drug in Saudi Arabia and has been banned over the years.

However due to the high price it commands in the Kingdom, the temptation by Ghanaian and Nigerian pilgrims to breach the law is irresistible.

It is consumed mostly by the migrant community in Saudi.

Saudi Arabian laws are also very strict on intoxicants or stimulants as Saudi Arabian laws were very strict on such matters.

Radio XYZNEWS gather that the Ghanaian pilgrims are being subjected to comprehensive security checks at the Jeddah Airport in Saudi Arabia.

It comes on the heels of last year?s arrest of a member of the task force of Ghana?s Hajj Committee by Saudi authorities for possession large quantities of stimulants without authorization.

Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Hajj Committee, Mohammed Amin Lamptey confirmed the seizure to XYZNEWS.

?We spoke to our advance team and they have confirmed it to us. Generally the security system in Saudi Arabia has been changed due previous experiences last year?, He said.

According to Amin Lamptey the focus is on Ghana because of the arrest and prosecution of Ghanaian pilgrims last year who was in possession of large quantities of stimulants adding that the committee has warned the pilgrims against carrying banned substances to Saudi Arabia.
