The 2014 Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership will be held in Nairobi, Kenya on March 2, 2015according to a statement released here Friday.Mo Ibrahim Foundation
The statement signed by Sophie Masipa and Alan Kamau from the Communications unit of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation observed the Ibrahim Prize announcement will be an interactive press event involving members of the prize committee.
Also present will be Mo Ibrahim, chairman and founder of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, the board of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation and former prize laureates.
Members of prize committee include Salim Ahmed Salim, Chairperson of the Prize Committee, former Secretary-General of the Organization of African Unity and former Prime Minister of Tanzania (and Board member of the Foundation), Martti Ahtisaari, former President of Finland and Nobel Laureate and A?cha Bah Diallo, former Minister of Education, Guinea and chair of Forum of African Women Educationalists.
The rest are Gra?a Machel, chancellor of the University of Cape Town, and former Minister of Education and Culture in Mozambique, Mohamed ElBaradei, former Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Nobel Laureate, Festus Mogae, former President of Botswana and Chairperson of the Coalition for Dialogue on Africa and Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and UN Secretary-General?s Special Envoy for Climate Change (and Board member of the Foundation).
The Mo Ibrahim Foundation was established in 2006 with a focus on the critical importance of leadership and governance in Africa.
By providing tools to support advancements in leadership and governance, the Foundation aims to bring about meaningful change on the continent.
The Foundation, which is a non-grant making organization, helps to define, assess and enhance governance and leadership in Africa using the following tools; Ibrahim Index of African Governance, Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership, Ibrahim Forum, Ibrahim Fellowships and Scholarships and Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership.
Established in 2007, the Ibrahim Prize celebrates excellence in African leadership. It is awarded to a former executive head of state or government by an independent prize committee composed of eminent figures, including two Nobel Laureates.
?It celebrates African leaders who have developed their countries, lifted people out of poverty and paved the way for sustainable and equitable prosperity.
Among the criteria for consideration for the Ibrahim Prize include being a former African Executive Head of State or Government, left office in the last three years, democratically elected, served his/her constitutionally mandated term and demonstrated exceptional leadership.
Previous Ibrahim Laureates include Presidents Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique (2007), Festus Mogae of Botswana (2008), Pedro Pires of Cape Verde (2011) and the late Nelson Mandela of South Africa (Honorary).
The Laureates provide role models for the continent. The Prize Committee may choose not to award the Prize, as was the case in 2009, 2012 and 2013.
